History of Ponsford
Ponsfords was established in 1893 by Harry Ponsford, a skilled silversmith who lived in a small terraced house in Myrtle Road, Heeley. Like many skilled artisans Harry had to find ways to supplement his income and support his growing family. He did this by collecting payments in the evenings for the local coal merchant. This work required him to visit most houses in the area, it was during this time that he was asked by many of his customers to supply household items, this was the start of the Ponsford shop.

The early days were a struggle, silver smithing by day and collecting most evenings, but it was by this enterprise that the family was able to move house, to a slightly bigger dwelling each time.

The family business began by trading from their backroom, in time they were able to have a shop in Valley Road. By the 1920's, Harry had been joined in the business by his son and daughter.

Harry's son Colin, now age 32, felt the business needed to expand and begin selling 1930's modern furniture, a dramatic change from the tastes of the twenties and before. To do this, new premises were found on a main road location. Number 581 London Road forms part of the shop today, which now covers from 579-609 London Road.

The building provides an excellent example of late nineteenth century architecture, retaining original features both externally and internally. Recently, considerable renovation work has been sympathetically carried out to restore parts of the building. It has been a source of great interest in the district throughout the years of painstaking development and now it is finished it has quite a magical character. Preservation work has involved restoring the Victorian style shop front and colonnade leading to the car park, and every time improvement takes place, some fresh piece of history is unearthed.

Perhaps the fabric of the building is old but the company is very much youthful and alive. It has earned and maintained for many years its status as one of the best furniture shops in the country. The spectrum of furniture, carpets and beds is the envy of many outside companies and it is still very much a family run business - one of the few to survive to the fourth generation.
